Core sales grew across all regions, led by Latin America with strong core sales growth of 33.5%. North America, Asia Pacific and EMEA generated core sales growth of 3.0%, 2.8% and 1.1%, respectively.

Core sales increased 6.9% in the Company’s Win Bigger businesses, which include the Writing, Tools and Commercial Products segments. The Home Solutions and Baby & Parenting segments generated core sales growth of 1.1% and 3.4%, respectively.

Gross margin was 39.2%, up 50 basis points compared to the prior year. The improvement was driven by productivity, lower input costs (including resin), pricing, the non-repeating adverse impact of the prior year Graco product recall on the prior year’s results and favorable segment mix, which more than offset unfavorable foreign currency and the negative mix impact from the gross margin structure of the recent acquisitions. Unfavorable foreign currency resulted in a 150 basis point decrease in gross margin, and the adverse impact of the cost of products sold associated with the Graco product recall in the prior year’s results contributed 40 basis points of improvement.

Selling, general and administrative expenses (“SG&A”) increased $43.9 million to $755.0 million, due primarily to increased advertising in support of the Company’s brands and innovation, costs associated with the Graco product recall, SG&A of acquired businesses (Ignite, bubba and Baby Jogger) and increased costs associated with Project Renewal transformation initiatives, partially offset by a reduction in overhead costs.
